Anaemia Treatment in Gachibowli, Hyderabad

Anaemia means a low haemoglobin level, so the blood carries less oxygen, causing tiredness, breathlessness and pale skin. It is very common in India, especially in women. Treatment depends on the cause, which blood tests reveal: iron deficiency is treated with iron tablets or an iron infusion, low B12 or folate with replacement, and the underlying reason, such as heavy periods, bleeding or kidney disease, is always looked for.

Diet, periods, bleeding, pregnancy, medicines and long-term conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease.

Heavy periods, stomach or bowel bleeding, poor absorption or kidney disease; referral for scopes or gynaecology when needed.

Common causes and their treatment

Treatment follows the cause.

CauseCluesUsual treatment
Iron deficiencySmall red cells, low ferritinIron tablets on alternate days or daily; an iron infusion when tablets don't work or aren't tolerated; find the source of loss
Vitamin B12 deficiencyLarge red cells, tingling feet, vegetarian diet or metforminB12 tablets or injections
Folate deficiencyLarge red cells, poor dietFolic acid tablets
Kidney diseaseReduced kidney functionIron, and in some people a hormone injection (erythropoietin) with a kidney specialist
Thalassaemia traitSmall red cells with normal ironUsually no treatment; iron only if also deficient; genetic counselling

How it’s diagnosed

A blood count, ferritin and iron studies, vitamin B12, folate and kidney function are done at the on-site lab, with other tests when needed. The cause of iron loss is always sought, with referral for endoscopy or gynaecology assessment when bleeding from the gut or heavy periods is likely.

How it’s treated

Iron deficiency is treated with iron tablets, or an iron infusion given at the practice when tablets don't work or aren't tolerated. Low B12 or folate is replaced, and kidney-related anaemia is managed with the kidney team. The underlying cause is treated, and haemoglobin is rechecked after a few weeks.

When to seek care

  • Breathlessness at rest, chest pain or fainting
  • Black, tarry stools or vomiting blood
  • Very heavy periods with dizziness
  • Anaemia in pregnancy
  • Unexplained weight loss with anaemia

FAQ

Can diet alone fix iron deficiency?

Iron-rich foods help prevent it, but once you are deficient, iron tablets or an infusion are usually needed to refill stores.

Why do iron tablets upset my stomach?

Iron commonly causes nausea or constipation. Taking it on alternate days, with food, or switching preparation often helps; an infusion is an option if tablets don't suit you.

How long until I feel better?

Haemoglobin usually rises within two to four weeks of starting iron, and treatment continues for a few months to refill iron stores.

Is anaemia linked to diabetes?

Yes. Kidney disease, metformin-related low B12 and inflammation make anaemia more common in diabetes, so it is checked regularly.
