Iron therapy

Iron therapy treats iron-deficiency anemia, using oral or, where appropriate, intravenous iron replacement.

Who it’s for

Patients with confirmed iron-deficiency anemia, including where it's connected to diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

What to expect

Treatment starts with blood testing to confirm iron deficiency and its likely cause, followed by an individualized course of oral or intravenous iron with follow-up testing to confirm response. Iron injections are available at the practice following medical assessment.

Evidence basis

Iron replacement for confirmed iron-deficiency anemia is standard, guideline-based care; the specific route and course are individualized to severity and cause.
