Hypertension
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the most common conditions alongside diabetes, and it needs its own monitoring and treatment target since it independently raises the risk of kidney, eye, heart, and vascular complications.
Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms — this is why regular blood pressure checks matter
- Headache, in some cases of very high blood pressure
Causes & risk factors
- Insulin resistance and diabetes
- Excess weight
- High salt intake
- A family history of high blood pressure
- Age
Nationally, hypertension affects an estimated 35.5% of Indian adults (ICMR-INDIAB national study (Anjana et al., Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 2023)).
How it’s diagnosed
Diagnosis is based on repeated blood pressure measurements against standard thresholds, sometimes supplemented with home or ambulatory monitoring.
How it’s treated
Management combines lifestyle measures (salt reduction, activity, weight management) with medication where needed, individualized to blood pressure targets that account for diabetes and kidney health.
When to seek care
- A blood pressure reading well above your target, especially with symptoms like severe headache or chest pain
- Vision changes
- Shortness of breath or chest discomfort
FAQ
Why does blood pressure matter so much alongside diabetes?
High blood pressure and diabetes both damage blood vessels, and together they significantly raise the risk of kidney disease, eye disease, and cardiovascular events — which is why both are monitored and treated together.
